Vienna, the capital and largest city of Austria, is an urban dynamic metropolis situated on the banks of the Danube river. It's a clean and safe city with a unique historical inheritance, outstanding infrastructure, marvellous architecture and 280 imperial parks and gardens which enrich the cityscape.
The most famous attraction is the Schonbrunn Palace, but there are also the Museum of Applied Arts, the State Opera House, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Natural History. The Hofburg (residence of Empress Elizabeth) is another highlight and buildings like the Parliament, City Hall, the Burgtheater, the University and the Votive Church are also interesting to see.
You'll find a variety of restaurants in Vienna, ranging from the typical Viennese tavern to luxurious restaurants that offer regional and international meals. The city concert halls and stages offer a whole range from classical to progressive sounds with festivals the whole year through.
Starting at the end of November lasting till Christmas Day you can find Christmas Markets or Christkindlmarkte in every corner of the city. The most famous is the Christkindlmarkt at the Vienna City Hall, at the Spittelberg and inside the University Campus.
Vienna currently has no central bus station and national Bundesbuses arrive and depart from several different locations. Westbahnhof station trains offer transfer from Vienna to Salzburg, Munich, Zurich, Frankfurt, Berlin and six night trains make a transfer from Vienna to Budapest. Westbahnhof is on U-Bahn lines U3 and U6, and many trams stop outside.
Vienna Sudbahnhof station trains connect Vienna to Rome, Bratislava and provide transfer from Vienna to Prague as well. Trams connect this station to other parts of Vienna as well as to the other stations.
Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof train station handles regional and local trains from Vienna to Tulln, Krems an der Donau and the Wachau region. Trams stop outside the station.
The smaller stations Wien Mitte, Wien Nord and Meidling all have U-Bahn stops and the former two have connections to the airport.
Vienna International Airport or Flughafen Wien-Schwechat (VIE), is located just outside the city of Vienna, and a few miles south-east of the suburb of Schwechat. The airport is the home base of the flag-carrier Austrian Airlines, as well as budget airline Niki.
To travel from Vienna airport to Vienna you can take the S-Bahn suburban train, City Airport Train (CAT) that operate from Vienna Airport to Vienna Mitte Station. You can also travel by bus or a taxi. Some hotels provide a shuttle from Vienna Airport.
The most comfortable and convenient way of Vienna airport transfer to the city centre is by booking a private airport transfer. You can find taxi in Vienna Airport but the cab fare is not fixed and it can cost you more than a fixed price private transfer.
Another option if you're flying to Vienna is Bratislava Airport (BTS) which is located 4 km from Vienna International Airport across the Slovak border. Private transfer from Bratislava Airport to Vienna or Vienna Airport is also available with City Airport Taxis.
