Most visitors prefer heading to the ski resorts or the beautiful seaside, but the capital of Bulgaria should not be overlooked as it will pleasantly surprise you. Sofia is a youthful, vibrant city, with a long history and beautiful churches, Ottoman mosques and various Communist buildings.
Most popular places to visit
The imposing Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is one of the main attractions in Sofia, along with the Sofia University and National Theatre Ivan Vazov. The Boyana church is one of the rare preserved medieval buildings, while the recent construction of the Sofia metro, remains of the Roman city of Serdika were found. You should also add to your itinerary the National History Museum, National Academy of Art and the National Gallery of Foreign Art.
Public transportation
The public transport in Sofia is extensive and efficient with bus, tram, trolleybus and metro network. It operates from 05:00 to 00:00, so at night, the only transport option in Sofia is the taxi. The same ticketing system is used for buses, trams and trolleybuses, while for the metro you need to acquire separate tickets at the station.
There are two metro lines in Sofia. The M1- Redline links Slivnitsa and Sofia, Business Park. The M2 – Blueline links the districts of Nadezhda, Obelya, the city centre and Lozenets to the south part of Sofia. The two lines intersect at Serdika Metro Station.
The trams are a convenient way to get to the city centre and some of the neighbourhoods. The buses cover most of the city and the suburbs, so it’s useful to travel to destinations not covered by the metro. The Central Bus Station is also a hub for intercity and international bus lines. You can take a bus to the ski resorts of Borovets, Bansko and Pamporovo, or if you’re headed to the beach, there are bus lines to Varna, Burgas, Nessebar and Golden Sands.
Unfortunately, the tourists can be easily scammed by Bulgaria taxi drivers. If you don’t know the route, the driver may be circularly taking you to your destination to keep the meter running. Before you enter the taxi in Sofia, look if the price list is displayed on the vehicle and ask the driver to confirm it.
Sofia airport is the busiest in Bulgaria and serves the capital, as well as the surrounding area. It is 10 km east of Sofia city centre, and it’s easily accessible.
Getting from and to Sofia airport
The relatively short distance from Sofia airport to the city makes it easy to plan your transfer. There are regular buses and metro line, or you can choose to rent a car at Sofia airport, take an airport taxi or book a private transfer.
The bus No. Eighty-four runs from Sofia International (T1 and Y2) to Gen. Gurko Street. There is another bus line No. 384 which departs only from T2 and runs between Sofia airport and Druzhba 2. The M1 line runs to the airport and will take to the residential complexes Druzhba and Mladost, as well as the city centre.
Sofia airport car rental is a good option if you’re planning to explore the city and the surrounding area. There are representative offices at the airport where you can arrange this service.
There is an official taxi company whose vehicles you can find outside the terminal. Beware of other taxi drivers who will approach you and try to scam you. Always ask for the price before you get in the vehicle.
