Public transportation in Muscat
The public transport in Muscat includes a new and modern bus network. Five bus routes that run to the most popular suburbs, shopping areas, the industrial district, downtown, and famous tourist destinations. The buses depart and arrive at Ruwi Station, while the schedule is not very frequent.
Cruise ships dock at Port 4, Sultan Qaboos in Mutrah, around 20 km away from Muscat. Ferries from Khasab arrive at this Port, as well. Taxis are available in front of the Port.
Muscat Taxis are abundant, and the vehicles are recognisable for their orange and white colours. Generally, they use meters, but it's best to set the rate before entering the city taxi. Maxi Taxi is a cheap shared service. You can take one on the highway to the Corniche area. Note that Maxi taxis have a previously agreed route and you should check if they make a stop near your destination.
Despite the erratic driving style, not clearly marked exits, and no road signs, car rental is the most convenient transportation option for more extended stays. You can rent a car at the airport or book the service online.
