Most people use the suburban rail, also known as "Locals". Mumbai has an extensive railway network that consists of three lines. The Central Main Line, the Western Line, and the Harbour Line operate from 04:00 till 01:00.
Buses run from 05:00 to 00:00. Selected routes run beyond midnight, but on a less frequent schedule. Average frequency between buses ranges from 5 to 30 minutes, depending on the route. Fares are reasonable, and buses are not too much crowded during peak hours, unlike trains.
Mumbai taxis are cheap and available anywhere in the city. Most taxis are small-medium sized cars, without air-conditioning, and you can recognise them by the black and yellow colours. However, if you want a comfortable, air-conditioned ride, it's best to travel by branded taxi companies that operate at official tariffs.
Auto-rickshaws operate only in the western suburbs beyond Bandra and in the central suburbs beyond Sion. Also, there are a few rental offices that you can rent a car, or rent a bike and drive yourself along the city or take you to/from the Airport.
