The bus is the only public transport option in Lanzarote and connects the larger cities with the most popular resorts. The main bus depot is in Arrecife, from where all buses depart to the rest of the island. The south coastline is entirely served by public bus, unlike the inner parts of the island. For example, there is no bus line to one of the main attractions, Timanfaya National Park.

Car hire in Lanzarote makes sense if you wish to explore the island at your own pace. As we mentioned, some parts of the island are not covered by the bus, so it’s perfect to go for daily excursions by car.

Public transport from and to Lanzarote airport

The only way to arrive at Lanzarote is by plane. Lanzarote Airport, also known as Arrecife Airport, serves the Lanzarote island and it’s only 5.5 km from the capital, Arrecife. It handles direct flights from many European destinations, while the connecting flights are through Spain. There are public transport, airport taxi and private airport transfer available.

The direct bus lines from Lanzarote to the rest of the island are limited. Thus, it can be very time consuming since you will need to change buses in Arrecife to reach your destination. Bus number 22 runs from Lanzarote International to Arrecife, while route 23 makes stop at Playa Honda, as well. Bus routes 161 and 261 connect Lanzarote to Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen.

There are two types of taxis you can take, the first one is to take a taxi from the taxi ranks and the second is a private airport taxi which can be booked online.
