Gran Canaria is a sunny island all year long and especially popular as a winter escape destination. The beautiful sandy beaches, stunning scenery and tourist resorts, are only a few things which make this island a magnet for tourists.
Most popular beaches to visit
The capital Las Palmas boasts essential cultural and historical heritage, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old district of Vegueta. The two bays in the city feature magnificent scenery including the beaches Playa de las Canteras and Playa de las Alcaravaneras.
The most popular beaches are in Maspalomas. The golden sand strip starts at Playa del Ingles and ends at the 19th century Maspalomas lighthouse. To stay away from the crowds and spend quality family time, many tourists prefer quieter beaches like the ones at Amadores, San Agustin, and Puerto de Mogan. For a more traditional, lively tourist atmosphere, Puerto Rico is the right destination.
Bus, car rental and taxi services
The only public transport option in Gran Canaria is the bus. The Gran Canaria bus network extends to every part of the island and the capital Las Palmas is the central hub. The yellow buses operate only in Las Palmas, while the blue ones can take you from Las Palmas to other parts of the island. Bus line 1 runs from Las Palmas to Mogan, while line 5 is used for transport to Maspalomas.
Car rental in Gran Canaria is a practical solution for tourists who wish to explore the island on their own. There are many car rental companies, and the price varies according to the type of vehicle. Gran Canaria taxis are available at the taxi ranks located nearby the main attractions and popular resorts.
Bus transportation from and to Gran Canaria airport
Gran Canaria Airport is the main gateway for the millions of tourists arriving every year on this sunny island. It is the sixth busiest in Spain, located 18 km from the capital Las Palmas and 25 km from the southern part of the island where you can find the most popular resorts.
A few bus lines are operating from and to Gran Canaria International. Bus line 66 runs from Gran Canaria airport to Maspalomas, while bus line 60 will take you from the airport to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Bus route 66 can be used to reach Playa del Ingles, as well. To get to Puerto Rico from Las Palmas airport, you can use the bus line 91 which runs from Las Palmas to Puerto de Mogan.
Car rental and private Gran Canaria airport transfer
Car rental companies have offices at the airport for anyone who wants to rent a car in Gran Canaria during their stay. You can find an airport taxi at the official taxi rank.
